So I bought this longneck saz, and I tuned it G D A, but it seems really quiet. It sounds way better tuned A G D - much louder. Unfortunately, all of my learning material is for the G D A tuning. Anybody else having this problem? Does anybody have any particular string preferences? The string diameters I have are 0.20, 0.30 and I don't know about the bass strings.

Re: Longneck saz tuning
Mon, November 6, 2006 - 6:05 AMThere are so many tunings, that it almost seems like you can pick the one for the key of the song you're in. When I got mine and started researching tunings, I ended up writing down about 12 of them. That way, you can make good use of the drones for almost any application.

..and then play the GD stuff as if it was tuned GDA?

Sat, November 18, 2006 - 3:24 AMI think I'm going to keep it at this tuning for now, maybe try to find some thicker gauge strings and see if that helps.

Re: Longneck saz tuning
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 1:08 PMThe written (and often sounding) pitch for baglama is GDA, but the actual pitch may be higher. Thus AEB, BbFC, etc up to CGD if your saz can tune that high.
Just read the music as if the strings were still tuned GDA, and your teaching materials will work.
Also, other tunings include EDA, F#DA, GCA, etc.
