I have just recently come home from Istanul with a short-necked (kisa
sap) baglama saz. I am looking for the best tuning for this instrument
that would let me play easily in the key of D. Suggestions? I am a
mandolin player and have instruments tuned GDAE and GDAD so a tuning
based on that would be an easy transition.
The other almost more important related question to this is then what
gauge strings should I be using to get to that tuning (remembering
this is a short neck 19 fret instrument)?
Thanks for any direction you can offer.

Re: Short necked saz tuning for tunes in D?
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 1:10 PMTune it CGD, as that is a standard short neck tuning... also AGD.
Use standard baglama strings, available at Lark in the Morning where I work. -

Tue, June 3, 2008 - 6:58 AMHi David -
Would that be C for the octave pair G for the middle pair and D for the triple pair (with one of the Ds an octave lower). -- That is - do I read the CGD in the same way as I read a guitar EADGBE?
Sounds like a dumb question I guess but everytime I tune up the middle of my triple pair the string breaks, so I wonder what the hell is going on.
